01
What these agents do
Inside sales agents research accounts, score and prioritise leads, draft outreach, run inbound qualification conversations, book meetings, and keep the CRM current. Autonomy ranges from drafting for a seller to running the conversation alone.
02
Genuinely good at
- Enriching and researching accounts at a volume no team can match
- Responding to an inbound enquiry in seconds rather than hours
- Keeping records complete, which most sellers will not do
- Consistent, patient follow-up
03
Genuinely bad at
- Complex, consultative, or multi-stakeholder deals
- Explaining why a particular lead scored the way it did
- Reading reluctance that is expressed indirectly
- Operating outside the markets its research sources cover well
04
The risks that matter
- Legal: unsolicited outreach is regulated differently in every market you sell into.
- Fairness: an unexplainable lead score is an unexplainable allocation of your team's attention.
- Quality: more meetings booked is not more pipeline if the no-show rate moves with it.
- Data: contact enrichment often relies on sources with unclear provenance.
05
How to evaluate one responsibly
- Ask whether scoring can be explained at the level of a single record.
- Ask for the downstream metric — meetings held, not meetings booked.
- Check do-not-contact enforcement inside the product.
- Establish where enrichment data comes from and whether you may lawfully use it.
